Deep water berth extension at Port of Halifax fully operational
The South End Container Terminal extension at the Port of Halifax is now complete and is fully operational.
With the extension project finished, the South End Container Terminal operated by PSA Halifax now has the longest and deepest container berth in Eastern Canada with 800 metres continuous length and 16 metres depth. The recent installation of a new Super Post-Panamax (SPPX) crane, the largest in Eastern Canada, brings the total compliment of SPPX quay cranes at PSA Halifax to five. Vessels over 15,000 TEU already calling further show how the Port of Halifax is a significant player amongst East Coast deep water ports and is taking part in the growing deployment of Ultra-Class Container Vessels.

Construction of deep-water berth at Pace Terminal in Poti, Georgia.
The new terminal will occupy 25 hectares of the New Port Zone in Poti’s former shipyard. The total length of the berthing facilities will be 650 metres, with a water depth of 12 m. This will be the first modern facility in Georgia to handle deep-water vessels by 2020.
Prime Concrete managed to successfully qualify for the tender in a highly competitive process with dozens of international contractors. Our competitive advantages lay in its distinctive means and capabilities, our experience and know-how, and our truly local presence.
Prime Concrete also partnered with the Dutch company Royal HaskoningDHV, which developed the most efficient design for berth and pier construction. We totally changed existing project design, made it more modern and more cost-effective for the customer.

The object dropped in the rotary table of the oil rig
This video showed that the crew failed to recognise the dropped object issue. The object was accidentally dropped into the rotary table. This will cause a lot of time and money to fish it out of hole. It may end up with side tracking the well if the fish cannot be recovered from the wellbore.
We need to ensure that the team must work carefully while working on the rotary table.

The project involves construction of a new 250m long deep water berth to accommodate increased calls of cruise and Panamax ships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels.
Phase 1 will be completed between Oct ’22 and April ’23.
Knights Brown has been awarded two contracts, one as managing contractor and another for trade contracts to complete the anchor wall, tie rods, walings and capping beam packages.

Portland Port Deep Water Berth February - March 2023
Portland Port has invested £25m in a new deep water berth so it could simultaneously accommodate two 350m long cruise ships. Knights Brown was appointed as managing contractor responsible for bringing the project in on time and budget.
The original deep water berth (DWB) was removed and replaced with a brand new, extended berth. The development has also seen a 74m extension to the solid quay face of the current primary cruise berth, the Outer Coaling Pier. Overall, the project created 16,000m2 of additional quayside space and enabled two 350m cruise ships to moor alongside simultaneously.
Knights Brown was awarded the role of managing contractor (£2.6m) and also trade contracts (£3.4m) for the anchor wall, tie rods, walings and capping beam packages.

MSC Hamburg away from Felixstowe deep water berth 8 with assistance of 2 Svitzer tugs 18th July 2021
MSC Hamburg 12.6 metres for Hamburg. Two tugs for departure. One defect as she only had one bow thruster working. The pilot had to wait for the services as the OOCL Hong Kong was taking both tugs around the corner. Svizer Deben makes aft and Svitzer Sky forward. Centre leads fore and aft the pilot required them to push up while singling up but if the Sky needs to they can take the starboard shoulder instead.
Wind on the Landguard SSE 142° 6 knots, height of tide 1.93 metres, 1 centimetre below prediction.
Once off the berth comes ahead on main engine sky let's go an peels off onto Harwich side then goes around the stern to push up at 45° angle port quarter. Deben powered indirect around the Beach End out of the harbour. The pilot was to transfer onto the deep draughted Maersk Edmo...

Portland Port has invested £25m in a new deep water berth so it could simultaneously accommodate two 350m long cruise ships. Knights Brown was appointed as managing contractor responsible for bringing the project in on time and budget.
The original deep water berth (DWB) was removed and replaced with a brand new, extended berth. The development has also seen a 74m extension to the solid quay face of the current primary cruise berth, the Outer Coaling Pier. Overall, the project created 16,000m2 of additional quayside space and enabled two 350m cruise ships to moor alongside simultaneously.
Knights Brown was awarded the role of managing contractor (£2.6m) and also trade contracts (£3.4m) for the anchor wall, tie rods, walings and capping beam packages.
The 430m long quay wall is constructed from 1.4m diameter, 24m long tubular steel piles with a AZ20-700 sheet piles between the tubes. Each tubular pile is anchored with 32m long tie rods back to a sheet pile anchor wall. 400,000t of material was required to fill this area up to pavement level.
25T precast concrete units were installed on top of the piles to act as permanent formwork for the in-situ capping beam. Surfacing that was due to be completed in a second phase was brought forward, allowing the port much fuller utilisation of its new berths during the 2023 cruise season.
The project, valued at £22m, was completed between October 2022 and April 2023.
A unique form of contract was adopted, which relied on collaboration between all parties to deliver the works. As originally tendered, the project was beyond the port's available budget. Through workshops with the client’s team, Knights Brown collectively agreed a way forward in which the port carried many of the major project risks and procured the high value materials and subcontract packages.
Through our role as managing contractor, we adopted mitigation measures to minimise the port’s exposure. These collective measures allowed the project to be brought in line with the budgetary requirements without compromising the scope.
